Call out for volunteers to support World Transplant Games 2019.

Next summer’s World Transplant Games will see 3000 visitors from across the globe, including transplant athletes, their supporters, living donors and donor families, taking part in a week of sporting events in top venues across NewcastleGateshead and the North East. To make these inspirational Games a success hundreds of volunteers are needed and recruitment is open now.

The Games take place between 17 and 24 August, and a variety of roles are available both in the lead up to and during the event itself. These include team registration and welcome, event set up, hotel and team liaison, driving and logistics, interpretation, accreditation assistants and many more.

Gateshead Council will manage the volunteer programme for the Games and now invite interested parties (aged 16 or over on 1 July 2019) to complete the on-line application form at: www.gateshead.gov.uk/article/9438/World-Transplant-Games-2019

Gateshead Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Volunteering, Councillor Linda Green said: “Volunteers will be an integral part of what makes the Games a community event that unites, inspires and uplifts. Without an army of highly skilled and enthusiastic volunteers on the ground, events like this could not be delivered and we are extremely appreciative of the time and effort volunteers commit. We are taking a very flexible approach to the volunteer programme, allowing prospective volunteers to sign up for half or full days and to choose the venues they wish to work at. Training will be provided in advance, so it is a great opportunity to develop skills and employability too”.

The Games will take place across multiple sites including Gateshead International Stadium, Sunderland Aquatic Centre, Close House Golf Resort, Sport Central, AMF Bowling Washington and the Northumberland Club and there will also be a supporting cultural programme.

The Games are a celebration of a second chance of living life to the full and demonstrate the success or transplant surgery and the need to stay active post-transplant. The Games will shine the spotlight on organ donation and the need to share our wishes with our families.
