North East businesses rally to support World Transplant Games

20th August 2019

Over 2,300 participants and supporters are in the North East for the World Transplant Games this week. During the Games 16 events will take place at 13 venues across the region, including Gateshead International Stadium, St James’ Park and Sunderland Aquatic Centre.

The Games have been made possible thanks to the support of a number of businesses in the North East and throughout the UK.

During the period of the Games (17-23 August) athletes, supporters and volunteers can use special discounts on travel as part of their official Games accreditation. Participants, supporters and volunteers can use the Tyne and Wear Metro and Go North East buses for free. Stanley Travel and What Bus are providing coaches for harder to reach venues, such as Close House Golf Club and Hetton Lyons Country Park (the venue for the 30km cycling).

Motor retailer Lookers has provided 11 World Transplant Games 2019 branded vehicles that are being used by World Transplant Games Federation members, as well as assisting local organisers travelling between venues and transport equipment during the Games. Frontier Group has supplied mobile phones for team managers and organisers to assist with communications throughout the week.

Northumbria Water has been on hand at all the events to keep the athletes hydrated, with Bidfood supplying pack lunches every day.

Bidfood also supported the fundraising activities in the run up to the Games providing food and drink for the Gift of Life ball, afternoon tea, breakfast briefings and the finale to Tom’s Baton relay at the Angel of the North.
