Leading researchers from the University work with clinicians at the Institute of Transplantation to bring scientific development from the laboratory bench to the bedside. The University consistently finishes within the top 10 of the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) rankings. The Performance Sport Programme aims to maximise the performance of its representative teams and individual athletes within the BUCS programme and national leagues.

It recently launched a BSc Sports and Exercise Science degree programme to complement the outstanding performances on the sports field, backed by a £30 million investment in state-of-the-art facilities. The University is an official partner to the Newcastle Falcons, the region’s only Premiership rugby club. This three-year collaboration will deliver mutual benefits in sports education, training and research, and includes a jointly-funded Newcastle University PhD studentship based at Kingston Park Stadium. The collaboration offers additional support for university players as part of the Falcons Associate Academy. This focuses on the level just below senior academy, with emphasis on Newcastle University’s performance players, professional coaching and recruitment.
